WHAT'S HAPPENING AT VILLA? www.vjmhs.org/aboutvilla/publications Did you know that you can view Villa's most recent edition of our Profiler magazine online? Past editions of the "Profiler," as well as our most recent Annual Report and weekly school Calendar emails, are available online too. Unfortunately, despite our Winter 2021 "Profiler" being mailed 7 weeks ago, it's been brought to our attention that many of our constituents haven't received it due to ongoing delivery delays with USPS. We are hopeful that those on our mailing list will eventually receive a printed copy at your home, but we're happy to share a digital version with you now!
The 98 students in Villa's Class of 2021 have already earned 450 scholarships, totaling $23,006,616. Keep an eye on the Class of 2021's scholarship/acceptance growing tally now on Villa's website homepage.
Congratulations to the students named to the All-Catholic Band, especially the two amazing musicians from Villa — Dakota McNally, Bari-Sax, and Hannah Buckleman, Trumpet. They performed in an outdoor concert at Cardinal O'Hara on April 10.
Villa is proud to announce that 4 of our students were selected as Diocesan Scholars for the 2021-2022 school year: Elizabeth Bowe, Allison DeFriece, Emily Montemuro, and Ashley Rosica. These 4 members of our Class of 2022 will attend classes at Gwynedd Mercy University and Villanova University in the fall. Congratulations!
In the Softball team's home opener, the Jems defeated Villa Maria 10-0. Junior Maria Gordon pitched a no-hitter with the defensive help of her teammates. Way to go, Jems!
Congratulations to Mary Frances McNulty on receiving the Widener High School Leadership Award. The awards, founded in partnership with NBC10, recognize the region's high school students who embody Widener's commitment to develop and inspire leaders who affect positive change. During the virtual ceremony, they posed the question, "How do you want to be knownā¦who do you want to be in life?" Chosen as 1 of only 3 to respond from over 300 participants, Mary Frances said, "industrious, hard working, considerate, thoughtful, and helpful." Villa knows that you most certainly emory all of those qualities, Mary Frances. Congratulations!
www.vjmhs.org/musical Congratulations goes out to the entire cast and crew of Mamma Mia! Thank you for your dedication in putting on such amazing performances. Did you miss Villa's Virtual Coffeehouse? Click the link above for a celebration of all things artistic at Villa! Each year, the highlight of Fine Arts Week is our Coffeehouse, so we couldn't pass up this opportunity to share our students' amazing artistic abilities with you, even though we couldn't be together in person this year. View slideshows of the best work from our art classes, musical performances from our chorale and band, and Shakespeare performances from our English classes, as well as a short highlight from our production of Mamma Mia!, performed April 8-11.
Thank you and congratulations to all of the musicians, artists, poets, and everyone that contributed to this virtual event!
Congratulations to Erin McFadden, Autumn Andrejczak, Hannah Buckleman and Brenna Czekner, who participated in DeSales University's High School Shakespeare Competition! The students memorized a monologue or scene focusing on the motivations and desires of their respective characters. Though the competition was virtual this year, the students will be able to participate in acting workshops and Shakespearean celebrations the week of April 26th via Zoom. View their performances on our Virtual Coffeehouse website — www.vjmhs.org/coffeehouse.
Congratulations to the Class of 2021 Valedictorian, Grace Matwijec, and Salutatorian, Alexandra Venth. š In addition to their academic accomplishments, these girls were very involved in all that Villa has to offer. Both girls are active members of Villa's athletic department – Grace with the Golf team and Alex with the tennis team. Neither was a stranger to participation in Villa clubs too! Some of Grace's highlights include being president of Mu Alpha Theta and the National English Honor Society, vice president of the Science National Honor Society and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, as well as Editor-In-Chief of "Quintessence" and a member of nine other clubs. Some of Alex's highlights include being president of the Environmental Club, vice president of National Honor Society, secretary of the Science National Honor Society, historian of the Spanish National Honor Society, and co-leader of Mock Trial and the Coding & Engineering club, as well as a member of numerous other clubs. Both girls will attend the University of Pennsylvania this fall.
On Tuesday, April 13, the Track and Field team competed for the first time in over two years. Many runners on the team never competed before in a high school meet due to the track season being canceled last year. Against Villa Maria, Mount St. Joseph Academy, and Gwynedd Mercy Academy, the Jems had a very successful day with many athletes achieving new personal bests or establishing high school best marks for the first time. The following athletes qualified for the league championship race in May at the very first meet of the season:
Congratulations to Villa's Rowing team on an awesome first two weekends of competition! Our 2nd Varsity 8 boat finished as silver medalists at the 2021 Mercer Sprints last Saturday. In the lead with 650 meters to go last Sunday at the 2nd Flick of the season, the crew achieved Villa's first ever Varsity 8 win by 10 seconds over Notre Dame Academy and Mainland. At the 1st Manny Flick regatta since 2019 (two weekends ago), Villa's rowers raced in the Junior 8 event. Villa took the lead from the Mount and Gwynedd Mercy 600 meters into the race and went on to post a gritty hard fought 6-second win. Keep going strong, girls!
Congratulations to the following VJM Students who won awards this year at the Delaware Valley Regional Science Fair:
Senior libero Gabby Lyons reached 1,000 digs this past volleyball season. Earlier this week, the Athletics Department presented her with a souvenir to commemorate the occasion. Way to go, Gabby!
Ms. May has been named the Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution State Winner for the 2020 Outstanding Teacher of American History Contest. On Friday, April 23, she will be attending the 124th PSSDAR Conference (virtually) to be recognized. Ms. May wants to thank all of the former students and colleagues who wrote on her behalf.
www.vjmhs.org/hope On Friday, April 16, our students danced for HOPE. They danced for Maria Middleton '21, "Bringing Hope Home," and "Drew's Hope." They danced for unity within our school and for causes greater than themselves. Seven hours of dancing was the culmination of months of fundraising and planning, and Villa is extremely proud of the efforts of our entire student body. At the end of the event, the final Hope-A-Thon tally wasā¦ $95,208.08! (Since then, the total has risen, as people continue to donate throughout the week!) Thank you to all those that donated, danced, and supported this event. 6ABC coverage of our event can be found here.
www.vjmhs.org/auction Thank you to our parents, business donors, volunteers, faculty, and staff, who supported Villa's online Spring Auction on March 16-20. $109,000 was raised for the girls!
Students: Since we could not host our in-person Career Day as usual, we had to get creative with Virtual Career Week! Several presenters, including some Villa alumnae, have created videos just for you which include information and advice related to their careers. Feel free to view these videos at your convenience to learn about these fields.
The list of presenters, as well as the links to view their videos, was shared in a Canvas announcement on Monday. Go check them out if you weren't able to already! We're grateful to these presenters for taking the time to create these videos and we're hopeful to host our in-person event next year.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Walinskas as mwalinskas@vjmhs.org. In addition, the presenters have included their email addresses if you are interested in contacting them directly with questions about their careers. Happy Career Week!
Each year, Villa students in World History and American Civilization I courses create research projects as part of the National History Day Research Competition. The best projects are then selected to compete in the Bucks-Mont Regional contest, with the winners advancing to the PA State Competition, and, hopefully, even the National Contest. This year, Villa will be sending 23 STUDENTS to the PA State Competition! We are extremely proud of our students and our staff that guided them to perform so well in this competition.
