Spend the Summer@Villa! Villa Joseph Marie High School presents the following summer camp programs to educate, excite, and inspire students in grades 4-12 throughout the summer!

 

G.O.A.L. (Go Out And Lead!)
July 17, 2017 – July 21, 2017
9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Girls entering grades 5-7
Cost: $195

G.O.A.L. is a week-long summer program for rising 5th- through 7th-grade girls who strive to become leaders among their peers. The course will include public speaking and team-building exercises, enhancing critical skills for any leadership position in school, on a team, or in the community. Students will be encouraged to consider various types of leadership and various roles for student-leaders. Led by members of Villa’s Campus Ministry Department, G.O.A.L. will inspire and educate young student leaders.

The EDGE

Two-week preparatory program for students interested in applying to Catholic high schools. This course focuses on HSPT preparation, resume writing, and interview skills. Strategies and skills learned at the EDGE will benefit students on entrance exams and all future standardized tests. It's a fun and educational program whether your student is looking for a refresher or a drastic improvement in scores. Limited to 45 students.

Portfolio-Building For Young Artists: Grades 6-8
July 10, 2017 – July 20, 2017 (No camp on Fridays)
1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Girls entering grades 6-8
Cost: $325

This two-week program introduces young artists entering 6th- through 8th-grade girls to the elements of art, principals of design and importance of portfolio-building. Students will learn about and apply these visual tools while creating their own works of art. Taught by a classically trained artist and Villa teacher (MFA), this course will offer students 1-on-1 instruction. Working from both observation and imagination, students will develop critical thinking skills, studying still life drawing and painting, printmaking and collage. Students applying for high school art scholarships will benefit greatly from this course. The course will culminate with a classroom show of the students work following the last day of class.

This two-week program introduces young performers entering grades 5–9 to the elements of musical theater, including singing, choreography, and stage direction through scenework, culminating in a final performance. No experience is required, and campers need only bring energy and a love of performing.

A one-week program for rising 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-graders. Surprise yourself with how creative you can be with paint, tye-dye, photos, jewelry-making and more! No previous art experience needed. C.R.A.M. 1 (Critical Reading And Math)
July 24, 2017 – August 4, 2017
8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
For girls entering grades 9-10
Cost: $200 - One Week - Choose Critical Reading OR Math
Cost: $325 - Two Weeks - Includes Critical Reading and Math
(Free for students enrolled in the Transcend Program)

Students will learn the basics of high-school essay composition and writing. Activities include pre-test, final evaluation with individual interview, audio/visual materials, "Jeopardy" grammar games, and essay/intro/thesis modeling. Students will be introduced to analysis techniques necessary for high school-level reading and interpretation. Readings will be works of poetry, short prose, long prose, and plays. This program will engage participants in a wide variety of unique and interesting problems that aren't always posed in a standard math class, and teach students numerous general problem-solving strategies that will give them the means to tackle difficult problems. Unlike a traditional math course, this program focuses more on the "how" of solving problems, giving students the confidence to think critically, a skill that transcends the classroom.

Portfolio-Building For Young Artists: Grades 9-12

Develop your artistic eye. Learn the techniques of landscape drawing and painting, working directly from observation. Class time will be spent outdoors as weather permits. Alternate time will be spent working indoors from a garden still life. Both linear and atmospheric perspective will be covered with an emphasis on color and the application of atmospheric perspective in painting. The formal elements of art and design principals will be explored through hands on experience. Build your observational skills and portfolio while creating your own original drawings and paintings. For portfolio use, all works will be done from life/observation. Students will have the option of producing final works in a drawing or painting medium of their choice. Students who have a strong interest in portraiture will have the opportunity to explore portrait study in a similar manner.

Philadelphia Neighborhood Immersion Experience

Students will serve at a variety of inner-city Philadelphia sites, which tend to the needs of the city's most vulnerable populations. Sites may include Aquinas Center (children), Inglis House (wheelchair-bound), and Sarnelli House (homeless and hungry). Limited to 12 students.

APPortunity Week

Rising Seniors are invited to participate in this one-week intensive preparation program for the upcoming college admissions season. Our guidance counselors, with the help of admissions specialists, will prepare students for college applications, interview, and essay components. Students will create their Common Application account and will be advised on its process. Students will develop a master schedule for their intended schools, which will include important due dates, required submissions, standardized test policies, financial aid deadlines, and on-campus opportunities. Don’t miss this APPortunity to alleviate the often-stressful process of organizing and readying college apps!
