Summer Programs

The Department of Guidance routinely posts summer study, internship, travel, and other opportunities of which Villa students are encouraged to take advantage. Students should consult the board in the main hallway for more information about these opportunities.

On campus, Villa Joseph Marie High School presents the following Summer Programs to educate, excite, and inspire students in grades 5-9 throughout the summer. These programs often need student volunteers to help make them successful. Interested students should consult with Mrs. Lasky for more information.

 

Creative Arts & You (Rising 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-graders)
A one-week program for rising 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-graders. Surprise yourself with how creative you can be with paint, tye-dye, photos, jewelry-making and more! No previous art experience needed. Bring a passion for self-expression, fun, and color! Space limited to 30 students. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Monday - Thursday, June 24 - 27, 2013       
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Snacks provided.

Cost: $125, includes all materials
Registration deadline: June 1

Drama Camp (Boys and Girls; Rising 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-graders)
Rising 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-graders with an interest in theater are invited to Villa’s summer Drama Camp. Directed by Ms. Gina Andreoli, this program aims to expose campers to all elements of theater, including acting, set design, lighting, blocking, and stage direction. This two-week camp will culminate in a stage production to which parents and friends are invited. No auditions/experience required.

Portfolio-Building for Young Artists (Rising 6th-, 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-graders)
This two-week program introduces young artists entering 6th, 7th and 8th grades to the elements of art, principals of design and importance of portfolio-building. Students will learn about and apply these visual tools while creating their own works of art. Taught by an (MFA), classically trained artist and Villa teacher, this course will offer students 1-on-1 instruction. Working from both observation and imagination, students will develop critical thinking skills, studying still life drawing and painting, printmaking and collage. Students applying for high school art scholarships will benefit greatly from this course. The course will culminate with a classroom show of the students work (following the last day of class).

The EDGE (Rising 7th- and 8th-graders)

Early Registration Discount ends 4/27!

A two-week preparatory program for students interested in applying to Catholic high schools. This course focuses on HSPT preparation, resume writing, and interview skills. Strategies and skills learned at the EDGE will benefit students on entrance exams and all future standardized tests. It's a fun and educational program whether your student is looking for a refresher or a drastic improvement in scores.

Go Out And Lead! (G.O.A.L.) (Rising 5th- and 6th-graders)
Villa is thrilled to introduce G.O.A.L., a week-long summer program for rising 5th- and 6th-grade girls who strive to become leaders among their peers. The course will include public speaking and team-building exercises, enhancing critical skills for any leadership position in school, on a team, or in the community. Students will be encouraged to consider their own positions on local matters, and will learn the process of proposing new legislation. Led by members of Villa’s Social Studies Department, G.O.A.L. will inspire and educate young student leaders.

Villa Prep (Incoming Freshmen Only)
Villa Prep is a two-week intensive course designed to provide a review of necessary high school math and English skills.  Students who have struggled with Pre-Algebra or basic Algebra skills will benefit from small class instruction and review of math fundamentals.  Reading comprehension will be the focus of the English sessions.  Students who experience difficulty in deriving meaning from text will be guided through short reading passages with a focus on active reading and self-assessment.  This course is not recommended for students with strong math and reading skills.

Summer Music Camp (Incoming Freshmen & Current Students Only)
As an introduction to Villa's music program, the Summer Music Camp is for all students interested in playing an instrument and joining the VJM Band or Orchestra. Experienced and non-experienced students are welcome. An instrument can be provided through the instructor, if needed. Lessons will be held on Wednesdays as follows:

Orchestra 9 a.m. - 10 a.m.
Concert Band 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Jazz Band 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Guitar/Fiddling 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.
Drum Line 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
Dates: June 12, 19, 26, July 10, 17, 24, 31, August 7, 14, 21
